Malach ha-Mavet - Angel of Death Statue

ANGEL OF DEATH (Heb. מַלְאַךְ הַמָּוֶת, malakh ha-mavet)

A symbol of the reality of eventual death of all living beings, to remind us that death brings a transformative process; energy is never destroyed but takes an unknown journey in a transformative 'otherness'. In Hebrew and Canaanite lore, the ruling deity delegates a messenger whose very nature is akin to other timeless spirits called a "messenger" (malakh), like the fallen angels Sammael (Samael), Azāzīl (the Islamic Satan as angel of death), Azrael is, like our malakh ha-mavet depicted here, a sinister and described in Jewish mysticism as a cruel snatcher of souls. Like the malache habbalah (angels of destruction), these demonic angels happily act as bringers of vengeance, who conduct tasks according to their nature, for both the Hebrew deity and the Devil as well. This Angel of Death represents equally a peaceful or a death which is the act of the reaper who smites and cuts down human life in a balanced measure.  The wings are depicted as human bones, with the scythe that smites souls since the beginning of time.
